How Do Permits Work on a Remodel, and How Long Do They Take?

It’s inspection morning, and I’m on site before the inspector arrives. It’s important to me to be there, meeting every inspection myself. I’ve gotten to know Austin’s inspectors over the years, and saving their numbers helps keep the communication line open. If I can’t be there, the inspection waits until I can.

People often come to me with horror stories they’ve heard or experienced about inspections and permits. Projects held up for months, stories about an inspector wanting work torn out and done over, work they’d already paid for. It doesn’t have to be like that. In Austin, permitting is one of my strongest suits. I know what the inspectors look for, how they like to communicate, and I respect that process. It’s part of making sure the job moves forward smoothly instead of getting kicked back.

In Austin, a remodel permit usually runs about a month. Knowing that up front means we can plan the job around it, rather than be caught by surprise. I’ve learned the process firsthand over the years, so I understand why people might be anxious about it. I’ve been on the other side, feeling that same uncertainty, but having someone familiar with the process can make all the difference.

With someone who knows the process and shows up for every inspection, the permit is the part of your remodel you can stop worrying about.
